Colorado Waterfall Series: Part One
Welcome to the blog version of my Colorado Waterfall Series!! I became captivated by the beauty + magic of waterfalls in 2009 after exploring Maui’s Road to Hana. Since then waterfalls are a top priority when I search for trails.
My toddlers + I dedicated the summer of 2023 to chasing waterfalls around our home state of Colorado! Every Wednesday (sometimes Thursday) for the next 15+ weeks I’ll be sharing a detailed waterfall trail guide with you. Most of the hikes are kid friendly or can be done with a child carrier!
I started this as a reel series on Instagram and will include the link to each video at the end. With winter approaching our waterfall chasing has slowed down. I plan to start it back up in the spring but for now I’ll re-share the first 16!! This is the first time I’m sharing the images I have of each waterfall 🫶🏼
The first trail on my list is Blue Lakes Waterfall. I’ve lost track of how many times we’ve hiked this short + gorgeous trail. It’s one of my favorite for out of town visitors! There are two trails that share a parking lot. Both are short, kid friendly and have stunning views.
📍Blue Lakes Waterfall Trail
Location: Breckenridge, Colorado
Distance: 1.1 miles
Style: Out + Back
Level of Difficulty: very easy, good for all skill levels
Elevation Change: 100 ft
🌲Terrain: the trail descends from the parking lot across the lower lake - this section is open and windy. you then follow the dirt road around the lake - this section is shaded and narrow. the trail is flat until the waterfall.
👀What to See: gorgeous mountain views, a cascading waterfall, wildflowers, a high alpine lake + usually some mountain goats
📝Tips:
highly trafficked trail with a small parking lot that fills up VERY quickly
heads up for those sensitive to high altitude: the trailhead is located at ~11,500 ft
road leading to the parking lot is rough + 4WD vehicles are recommended
high chance of encountering wildlife, please keep your space + respect them
there is an old mining house built in the 1800’s to explore
it’s perpetually windy, I recommend bringing a jacket
buggy during spring + summer months
dogs on leash are welcome if you pack out their poop
please remember to Leave No Trace
