Tips for Flying with a Toddler
I’ve been traveling on planes my entire life! I even took Liam on two flights by myself in his short 10.5 months of life. It took almost two years for us to take our wild child, Carson, on a flight. Last week we finally made that leap and I want to share some tips that helped make it an enjoyable experience for everyone!
Remain calm & confident
Flying with a toddler is an extremely daunting task, but try to remember that your little one can sense fear. They are looking to you for how to respond to this new situation. Hopefully mustering up happy energy and positive vibes will rub off on your toddler. If not, at least it helps you keep your cool and shows them that flying isn’t a scary experience. This was the hardest part for me because I wear my feelings on my sleeve. But I slapped a smile on my face and did my best to remain calm!
Bring their car seat on the plane
A car seat is a guaranteed way to keep them strapped in! It also provides a space they are comfortable & familiar with.
Don’t forget the iPad or Tablet
Make sure it’s charged & download movies or shows beforehand. Most airlines provide the ability to charge your devices in-flight so pack those chargers in your carry on!
Snacks snacks & more snacks
I like to spice it up and bring a variety of snacks. Some of his go-to favorites, fresh healthy snacks & special treats. I highly suggest offering snacks during take off & landing to help their little ears adjust!
Buy a new toy to give them on the plane
This is something my mom did with me as a child & I loved it so much I’ve kept the tradition going with my kiddos. She would wrap a present and give it to us when the plane was “flat” aka the ding around 10K feet when you can turn your large electronics on. The goal is to find a toy or activity to keep them entertained for the flight. Things like puzzles, games, or coloring books! For our last trip I bought Carson an activity packet from the dollar spot at Target & a new fire truck!
Plan the flight around their sleep times
I know, I know… this is easier said than done. In my opinion early morning and late night flights are best. It’s much more inconvenient on us as parents. However, the airport is quiet at those times which means shorter lines and less people around. Those very early and late flights are also dark and quiet - the perfect environment for sleeping. It doesn’t always work but sometimes manipulating their sleep schedule around a flight will work in your favor.
